incubating eggs

it's that time of year again...

this time it's

duck eggs..

Tyler put 15 eggs in today...

we'll candle these in a couple of weeks,
to see how many are fertile...

update on April 3rd..
all 15 eggs are fertile :D

Ginny lays her first egg on the first day of Spring

yesterday we had some snow

not much accumulated
just enough to cover the driveway again

and enough to recover the paths
that the birds had been enjoying
the dirt and mud in

today even though
it does say
"First Day Of Spring"
on our calendar today..
 the weather has
other ideas

it's been dull/gray all day
with snow squalls
on and off
 throughout the day

doesn't look very "springy" out there,
does it?

even when the snow stopped
it was dark and dreary

but
the best moment of the day
happened when..
.
Tyler and I were outside,
at the exact time,
that we watched
Ginny
 lay her first egg!

a "normal" Saturday again

it's been a long time getting here..
though in reality it's only been 5 months
 since Ron broke his leg,
and has been housebound...

but it feels longer
(more for him than for Tyler and I)

today was the first Saturday
since Oct 22 2012
that we did things like we
"normally" do..

Ron and I headed into town
to do errands
first thing in the morning..

then after lunch
they guys got back to
doing some things
they do together...

moving wood

and pruning trees!

Ron felt so great being out there
doing work again!

and it was fantastic seeing
him and Tyler
working side-by-side again

always a hunter..
even with a saw haha
(he was making the sound,
and doing the action of cocking a gun)
good thing he doesn't go to public school
he would have been suspended for that little action
(seriously, he probably would have)

Ron's new saw
just arrived this week

it is a
Sugowaza Saw

they prunned
60 trees today

meanwhile around the fields.

the snow is going down..
a few weeks ago,
the snow was up around the middle rung
on this tomato cage..

the trees in the cattle field
are getting more ground showing
underneath them

the wheel on the trailer is starting to show

the trail in the bush
is crusted over
so you don't go through
the top layer of snow anymore
and my snowshoe tracks
are just barely visable

Charlie is feeling less closed in

the pathway back to the house
is clear of snow
thanks to Ron plowing it

the ducks enjoy the snow-free
areas near their house

so does Ginny
(as Oreo watches from above)

but winter might take one more swat at us..

Monday - Thursday this week
snow is forecasted..

so our snow will definately be staying longer
than it did last year

by the end of March last year,
we had no snow at all
not even in the bush!

I'll be taking updated pictures this week
to keep our record keeping up to date
(for snow anyways)

rain

the snow didn't melt as fast
as we thought it would
with the higher temps
and rain,
the past couple of days..

Sunday and Monday
our temps were around +10C

yesterday we had a day of rain..

today's temp was around +5 C
it was cloudy and gray,
with some rain,

the ducks sure enjoyed the rain yesterday

today was drier
and a bit brighter

you can see all of the wishing well,
that sits on the well cover

there is still a fair amount of snow in the fields

the banks alongside of the road
are melting further back each day
which makes it safer to walk along the road again
so far,
the septic bed is the only spot
in the front yard
that the snow has melted off
... it is nice to have the driveway
clear again

the areas that Ron plowed
are down to grass..
and puddles

the areas that he didn't plow
have a bit of snow left on them

the cattle area is getting really mucky
the banks around the house
will be around for a while

the birds were enjoying another snow-free area today

Oreo's fur gets rough looking during the winter,
from her going under the henhouse..
her back scrapes along the metal edges of the walls
as she squeezes under the edges
and it gets worn off...

Charlie doesn't come out too often during the spring..
he doesn't like the mud and muck
