corn

we harvested a few cobs of corn yesterday
enough for Ron to have a few helpings
(he is the only one here that eats corn)

we broke each cob in two pieces
so when I cook some for him
when they are frozen,
they will fit into a pot easier

blanched the corn for 2 minutes

drained the corn

wrapped in freezer paper

2 halves = 1 serving

then all the single-serving packs
are closed into zip-lock freezer bags,

musket practice

they guys were out testing their new guns today..

Tyler was up first..

Tyler's shots are the 3 making the curve

next up Ron...

Ron's 3 are..
just near the middle of the side of the box,
the one on the flap
and one shot went through one of the openings

random pictures

the meat birds are doing well..

they have about a month left to grow
maybe two.. we'll see..

my favourite tree hasn't started changing colours yet

Charlie snoozing away in his dugout

Tyler and Ron bought new guns last weekend.

blackberry season has begun!

while there were still a lot of red berries
there are a good amount of ones that have ripened

we will do the majority of the picking this weekend
when Ron is home..

I was not comfortable out in the bush
without him and his gun beside me ..

heat wave

the July heat wave started here yesterday..

hitting a high of
30 C
with a humidity level of 40 C

today we are at 31 C

these temperatures are supposed
to hang around till Friday..

these are pictures at Jamieson Lake
Friday July 12..
sun was rising over the tree tops,
and mist was rising off the lake

and it was still as pretty
when we took the dogs down there,
after supper

Tyler and Hayley
were way ahead of us on the way home
(squint and you may see them near the middle of the picture)

we've been letting Charlie off his lease
for the last part of the walks home
(he's too tired then, he won't take off running haha)

Does a McD's hamburger decompose?

I've seen those pictures
floating around the internet for a while now..

the ones that show a McDonald's hamburger,
and how, after a long period of time,
it looked the same as
the day the person bought it..
it talks about how the burger
does not go bad..
and if food doesn't decompose
it's an unhealthy food choice
(think Twinkie)

my curiosity got the better of me today..

going to do my own version of
myth busting...

today I went to our local McDonalds
and paid $1.35 for a plain,
(no condiments on it at all)
child's size hamburger

Tyler was with me,
and he commented how the burger doesn't even
smell appetizing anymore
(we haven't eaten at McD's for a couple of years
and we don't find that "fast food" smell
appealing at all)

I'll wrap this burger back up
in the wrapper it came in..
and leave it on the table in our living room..

I'll check it daily
and make notes as to if/when it starts to go bad

we did a unplanned experiment this past Christmas like this,
using those 2 bite cupcakes that are sold
in the local grocery stores..
chocolate ones with
white icing,
with coloured sprinkles on top...

the cupcakes started going hard a week past
their "best before date"
.. after 2 months I threw them out..
they  LOOKED exactly like they did
the day I bought them..
the only difference was that they were as hard as a rock
by the time I threw them out..

that was a big eye opener for Tyler,
and he's never asked me to buy him
a package of those cupcakes since

now I'm wondering if this experiment
is going to solidify our stance
to never eat at McD's again ;)

*THAT* tree is down!

that tree..

yep.. THAT one..

the one that Ron was repelling
back in October

it saw it's final day

Tuesday June 4th

SUCCESS!
it's down!

the broken leg gets the last laugh ;)

and now the process
of turning it into firewood begins..
June 5th..
