walking with Charlie

I was hoping to get one more
snowshoe hike done
before the warmer weather
and rain showed up..
but the day didn't go as I planned

I broke 2 clasps
on the snowshoe harness
as I was tightening them around my boot..
(same harness, 2 different clasps)

since I didn't want to take a chance
on a 3rd clasp breaking,
while out in the bush..
I decided, instead,
to take Charlie for a walk
down to Jamieson Lake

it was a cloudy day,
although much warmer
high of + 11 C

the snow is melted off the road,
but there are still high banks along the edge

Jamieson Lake is still covered..

except for near the culvert

it's nice that the shoulder of the road is showing,
gives us a bit of wiggle room,
to move over,
when a vehicle goes by.

haha Charlie has the same stance in both photos
as he waits patiently for me to take a picture

he wasn't going to stand, and wait,
for the next picture..
he wanted to get home for a drink

he enjoyed the walk though..
it was the first long one he'd been on
in months..

snowshoeing again

another gorgeous day
high of +4 C
and not a cloud in the sky!

headed up towards the Sap Shanty this time
first time in a long time,
no old snowshoe tracks to make
the hiking easier

yep, there's a fair amount of snow
that is needed to melt
before spring arrives in the bush
the picnic table on the left
is totally covered

kept on going past the Sap Shanty
up the big hill
towards the pond hole
stopped halfway up to look back
no tracks in front (above)
and only my tracks behind (below)

arrived at the pond hole
to find a tree was down

at the edge of the property,
 found another tree down..
blocking the trail that goes on to crown land..
(trail curves to the left almost like the
shadow is curving towards)

the tip of the downed tree is on the left,
our boundry markers on on the tree on the right

since I reached the spot I wanted to get to,
I turn around and head home

soaking up the gorgeous sunshine
along the way

yep, that downed tree at the pond hole
will have to be removed this spring/summer
our 4-wheeler will not be able to get by it at all

Ron's tree is still standing..
it's high on Ron's "hit list" of trees
that will be coming down this year ;)

I wanted to measure how deep the snow
was in spots,
so I used my snowshoe
my boots are size 8..

in this spot..
the snow is up to where there are 4 holes
in the webbing of the snowshoe..,
going back to the picture above,
I can measure how deep the snow is here..

near the blackberry bushes,
it's a wee bit deeper

so glad that we have snowshoes
that allow us to walk
on the snow,
instead of sinking up to our knees
with each step

the forecast is calling for rain this weekend
and temperatures around + 8C..
so this might be my last snowshoe
walk of the season..

maybe....

heard a crow today while snowshoeing

this time I headed out to the Horse Pasture

I first went around the cattle fence
and got another shot of the fence line
this is why I'm glad the cattle are blocked in
the little area that they are..
otherwise they'd be just walking over
the fence at the far west corner
of their summer field.

then I was off to the bush..
the guys were trying to use this trailer
to haul wood in last fall,
when part of it broke away from the 4-wheeler..
it never got moved before Ron broke his leg,
so now it's being used as a visual
for how much snow is out there,
and how fast it's going to melt..

I noticed the blackberry bushes
are engulfed in snow this year..

here's the #1 reason Ron shouldn't snowshoe this year..

the snow right now,
is moisture heavy,
so it's hard to walk through,..
and as you do,
the snow piles up on the front tip at times..
and that brings you to your knees
(well me it did, as couple of times haha)

it's hard getting upright again
from a kneeling position,
when the snowshoe tips are
pushed farther into the snow
difficult but not impossible..
after getting myself standing,
I was off again..
trail to the Horse Pasture is to the left,
to the right goes up to the Sap Shanty

almost to the Horse Pasture

looking back,
just after going around the little Horse Pasture area
(to the left)

this is the Horse Pasture area..
it's where Grandma and Grandpa used to have horses..
many many years ago..

there is a fence,
just a little to the east of the Horse Pasture,
that marks the boundry line
of our property and crown land..

it's nice to not see any
snowmobile tracks along the trail this year.

coming back out of the Horse Pasture area,
I debated which trail to take next..
a)left trail that take me down
to the Cement Pad
b)middle trail goes to the Sap Shanty,
c)the trail to the right,
is the main trail I just came along

I chose C.. back down the main trail

another decision at the next bend..
do I
a)go left, and head along the main trail,
or
b) go straight,
and head through the Swamp Trail again?

main trail won again

back past the blackberry bushes

another great day to be out in the bush..

especially since I heard a crow today!

that's a great thing to hear,
as crows are not around here during the winter..
they usually arrive back just before spring arrives..
and before the summer birds come back too

gray jays,
chickadees,
bluejays,
and ravens
are in abundance in our area

but not crows...

so it's nice to hear that first crow of the season cawing
